Dialect: A Game About Language and How It Dies

Dialect by Thorny Games is a game about an isolated community, their language, and what it means for that language to be lost. A GM-less game, it runs about 3 - 4 hours, and the possibilities are endless.

Thoughts from our team:

“I love how different it can be with different groups! It’s very flexible depending on the people you’re playing with.” - Trivia

“What drew me in initially was how much I enjoy the idea of a tiny single organism (a word) containing so much history, which changes depending on the angle you view it from - and in most cases, that story becomes entirely opaque or forgotten as it enters the greater lexicon.”_ - Dean_

“Dialect has been an elucidating experience for me. It playfully provides tools to respond to gaps in language. Now, when I realize there is not a word for something, like the feeling you have when all you can do is lay on the floor, I can gather my friends and we can create it together. Although this jargon is only used among us, we both bond over a shared idea and have a word that better describes our experience. This game helped me practice doing that. It also really helps to show how words evolve with time, and gives a structure for how the meaning of them can change depending on our cultural narrative.” - Carnelian

(Yes, this is us. Yes, we’re adorable – thanks for noticing!)
