Guest Blog: Bringing Fiasco to Roll20

Hey friends!

I’m Jason from Bully Pulpit Games, designer of Fiasco and Roll20 fan. I thought I’d share a little bit about why the new version of Fiasco is a perfect match for Roll20, and what was involved in bringing it to the platform.

If you are unfamiliar with Fiasco, it is a tabletop roleplaying game about dumb people getting into trouble. It flips the script on most roleplaying games, in that you really savor the stupid confusion and epic failure that your characters inevitably endure, and things inevitably do not go well for them. For example, when my friends Jay, Jeeyon and Jenn (all J’s all the way) played, Roll20 helped us share an epic tale of misbegotten love among a Satanic coven who all worked at an upscale mall - pitch-perfect Fiasco.

We redesigned the game with virtual play in mind. For example we replaced lists and hand-written index cards with poker-sized cards, which help keep play brisk and easy to follow on a virtual tabletop. The strong visual elements now both inform and orient you. All the elements of the physical game are there, carefully tuned to the digital format. Our goal with the new edition of Fiasco was to streamline play and make it more accessible, and that meshed well with Roll20.

Every choice we made had to align nicely with virtual play, and I feel like we’ve done just that.

Actually converting the assets into the format Roll20 requires was time-consuming (Over 600 individual cards configured and uploaded!), but definitely worth it. The look and feel of the virtual tabletop Fiasco experience is great. I’m really looking forward to hearing about the stupid Fiasco’s you get into using Roll20’s tools and interface!
