A New Light: The Convert Lighting Tool is Now Live!

Written by The Roll20 Team | Aug 6, 2020 7:00:00 AM

Last week, we released the Convert Lighting Tool on the Dev server so our Pro users could give it a first look, under the name of “Dynamic Lighting Conversion Tool.” Now, after incorporating valuable feedback (including a different name for the sake of clarity and harmony with the UI), we’ve pushed it to our Live servers. Now everyone can convert their Legacy Dynamic Lighting games to Updated Dynamic Lighting in just a few quick moments. Here’s how it works!

What is it?

The Convert Lighting Tool allows users to convert their Legacy Dynamic Lighting games to Updated Dynamic Lighting. It’s easy to use, and it’ll switch both your game’s existing Token and Page settings with just a few clicks.

Dynamic Lighting is an advanced map lighting tool currently available to Pro and Plus users. To learn more, head to our Dynamic Lighting and Fog topic on the Help Center here.

__Where is it? __

The Convert Lighting Tool is now available on the Live server, so you’ll see it in your games featuring Legacy Dynamic Lighting. You’ll find it on the game details page, under the Settings dropdown.

__Why do we need it? __

Updated Dynamic Lighting brings faster performance, additional features, and an overall better lighting and exploration experience. It’s been in active development for a while, during which time users could test it out and provide feedback as we worked to bring it to feature parity with Legacy Dynamic Lighting.

Now, we’ve hit that goal. But that doesn’t mean development is over. We’re going to continue to refine, tweak, and tune Updated Dynamic Lighting. That said, part of that development will be, eventually, sunsetting Legacy Dynamic Lighting.

Before we reach that point, however, we want to make sure users have the time and resources necessary to convert their games to Updated Dynamic Lighting. That’s why we’ve developed the Convert Lighting tool. We want to make sure the transition process is as smooth as possible.

__How Does it Work? __

The Convert Lighting tool just converts all your Legacy Dynamic Lighting settings into Updated Dynamic Lighting settings.

To use it, you’ll navigate to the game details page and click the Settings dropdown. From there, you’ll click the Convert Lighting button and be directed to the Conversion tool.

Here, your game will feature a selection of items–maps and tokens–that you’ll be able to convert to Updated Dynamic Lighting. Just select the checkbox next to an item to mark it for conversion.

Once you’re ready to proceed, just click Convert.

It’s that simple!

As we mentioned above, the Convert Lighting Tool was first available on the Dev server to Pro users last week. If you’re a Pro user curious about the Dev server, head here to learn more. If you’re not a Pro user and you’d like to be, head here to learn more about subscribing.

As always, thanks for playing with us.
